60-second interview with Jade Gani
Jade Gani TEP, Head of Private Client at Meadows Ryan, was awarded the Young Practitioner Award in the 2021 STEP Private Client Awards. She enjoys using her platform to help guide other young lawyers in their journey through the profession.
What is your role within your firm?
I am a solicitor and the Head of the Private Client Department. I manage my department, have a full caseload, and assist in training junior staff.
How did it feel to win a STEP Private Client Award?
It was extremely validating and overwhelming – in a good way! The STEP Private Client Awards really are a mark of excellence and to be fortunate enough to win one is a blessing.
Why is winning a STEP Private Client Award important to your firm?
As a small, high-street firm, to be recognised on a global scale by such a prestigious award is so important. It demonstrates that top quality can be found outside of big cities.
What are the main challenges facing your organisation/practitioners at the moment?
Pressures on Probate Registries and the Office of the Public Guardian are causing day-to-day issues for many, though the shift towards technology and its impact on legislation and regulation will continue to be points of consideration for many practitioners.
How will you deal with these challenges?
With an open, progressive mind but also with a refusal to compromise the quality of service we provide. The client experience should always remain the priority.
What do you like best about your job?
I thoroughly enjoy using my platform and position to help guide other young lawyers in their journey through the profession.
... and what do you feel is most worthwhile?
My charity work that supports the most vulnerable members of our community. As William James said, ‘the great use of life is to spend it for something that will outlast it’.
What would you say to a young person thinking of a career in this industry?
The path to law can seem like a very long, never-ending road sometimes. But keep at it. You will get there eventually and will learn so much along the way if you just embrace it.
Where do you see future growth, both in terms of sectors and jurisdictions?
Technology and data! There is so much untapped potential in both, but a few companies are starting to bring together technologically minded individuals with expert practitioners to produce game-changing solutions.
What do you feel are the main challenges facing your organisation/practitioners at the moment, and how will you deal with them?
Care fee reform is perhaps the most topical issue currently. The UK government’s proposals have been deliberately opaque and I intend on becoming involved in consultations relating to changes and holding the government accountable when needed.
