Alzheimer's Disease International

Alzheimer’s Disease International (ADI) and the STEP Private Client Awards have continued to collaborate to amplify the global voice of people living with dementia and carers. Over the course of our three-year partnership, we have worked tirelessly to raise awareness, educate our members about safeguarding and financial abuse issues affecting our communities, improve access to high-quality care worldwide and address one of the most urgent health crises of the 21st century. As we approach the final year of our partnership in 2025 with STEP, we look forward to continuing our vital work and the lasting impact that together we can achieve.

ADI, the global federation of Alzheimer and dementia associations is dedicated to raising awareness, advocating for dementia as a public health priority and driving investment in research and innovation. It is a condition that is still poorly understood and the stigmatisation and misinformation that surrounds dementia remains a global problem. There are currently over 55 million people living with the condition in the world today. By 2050, this number is estimated to increase to 139 million. Thanks to your generous support, we raised a phenomenal £61,840.76 enabling us to deliver two vital initiatives: a symposium at our 36th Global Conference of Alzheimer’s Disease International, hosted and held by STEP and our flagship awareness campaign, World Alzheimer’s Month.

36th Global Conference of Alzheimer’s Disease International and member webinar

STEP delivered a vital symposium at our 36th Global Conference of Alzheimer’s Disease International, which took place in April 2024 in Krakow, Poland. This crucial session provided delegates with valuable insights into the key issues surrounding financial abuse, safeguarding and estate planning and protection. With global populations ageing and the number of people living with dementia set to triple by 2050, these issues are becoming more urgent than ever. In addition, ADI partnered with STEP to host a webinar in November for our member associations, focusing on these issues, as well as lasting power of attorney. This was a vital resource to educate our members and provide them with knowledge that they can share with their beneficiaries in the countries in which they operate.

"It was such an interesting webinar, with so many amazing people doing incredible work. Our elders truly deserve support and protection to ensure their rights and dignity are upheld. I was especially moved by the story of a lady we met in Kenya, who faced a challenging situation to reclaim land her father had been pressured to sell. Her perseverance paid off, and she ultimately succeeded.”

We are incredibly grateful to STEP and their members for making it possible to share this vital information, ensuring people are empowered with the knowledge needed to protect those who are most at risk.

World Alzheimer’s Month

STEP donations supported World Alzheimer’s Month 2024, a campaign held every September to raise awareness and challenge the stigma surrounding dementia. The focus of the 2024 World Alzheimer’s Month campaign was ‘attitudes to dementia’, seeking to evaluate how our perceptions of dementia have changed since the previous campaign in 2019. The 2024 campaign was our most successful to date, surpassing previous records with a combined reach of over 81 million on social media and mentions in more than 4,000 independent publications.

ADI was delighted to provide 31 bursaries for members, the most we have ever been able to offer. These bursaries enabled members to engage in the campaign to raise awareness, translate materials, and promote it through social media, further expanding its reach and impact globally.

“Luckily, we were awarded a bursary, and it has significantly increased our capacity to pay and boost our campaign materials in different social media platforms. Which helped us to reach a wider audience and create active engagement throughout the World Alzheimer’s Month.

Also, the financial support enabled us to expand our outreach programs to underprivileged communities in rural Ethiopia” Alzheimer’s Ethiopia.

The contributions of STEP have been essential in advancing education, driving positive change, and leaving a lasting legacy within the dementia and Alzheimer’s community. We are incredibly grateful for your support, thank you. As we look ahead to 2025 and the final year of our partnership, we are excited for the continued opportunity to invest in our members and reach even more people living with dementia worldwide. Together, we can make an even greater impact. Thank you
